After winning the individual gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, sabre fencer Oh Sang-uk will try to give South Korea its third consecutive team title Wednesday.
Oh will be joined by Gu Bon-gil, Park Sang-won and Do Gyeong-dong in South Korea’s gold medal defense at Grand Palais in the French capital.
South Korea won the men’s sabre team title in 2012. The event was not part of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, based on the rotation of team events that left one weapon off each competition. When the event returned in 2021 in Tokyo, South Korea was crowned the champion once again.
Oh and Gu were on the 2021 squad. Two of their teammates then, Kim Jung-hwan and Kim Jun-ho, have since retired, replaced by 한국을 inexperienced Park and Do. Gu, who also competed in 2012, is on the downslope of his career at age 35.
That puts the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Oh, who is fresh off his first Olympic individual gold medal from the first day of the Paris Games.
The quest for the three-peat begins in the quarterfinals against Canada.
Elsewhere on Wednesday, badminton star An Se-young, world No. 1 in the women’s singles, will play her final Group A match against Qi Xuefei of France. An will book her spot in the quarterfinals with a win.
