Ontario urges vigilance as it cracks down on online casino fraud
Law enforcement agencies in Ontario, including the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ontario Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO), raised the alarm after finding a series of scams targeting unsuspecting gamblers, local media CTV News Barrie reported. The scam ads, touting interesting gaming opportunities allegedly involving casino llamas, have led users to unregistered platforms such as WinSpirit Casino.

A spokesperson for the OPP warned that while the appeal of online games can be tempting, it is imperative that individuals remain vigilant. They stressed that such fraudulent ads potentially compromise users’ personal information and financial security, and pose significant risks.

Authorities highlighted the importance of using regulated game sites that adhere to strict standards of game integrity, data security and player protection measures.

Licensed gambling halls in Ontario are strictly supervised by AGCO and ensure a safe and fair gaming environment for all participants.

At the same time, AGCO and iGaming Ontario recently published an IPSOS study, which found that 86.4% of Ontarian players used regulated sites for online gaming in the last three months, up from the previous year.

Nevertheless, more than 13% of Ontario residents still use unregulated sites, raising concerns about the risks involved, as AGCO CEO Karin Schnarr highlighted.

AGCO Urges Attention To Online Gambling As Tips To Avoid Fraud Scheme
An official from AGCO emphasized the importance of paying attention when participating in online gambling activities. They emphasized the importance of checking the registration status of game sites and using common sense when encountering online advertisements, and suggested that residents can reduce the risk of getting entangled in fraudulent schemes.

The state’s recommendation comes as similar warnings have been issued across Canada as online casino scams surge across the country. In January, Manitoba Recurrence & Rotary (MBLL) warned Manitovans about fraudulent social media posts promoting Club Regent Casino’s online gaming app, urging caution and reporting ads to Meta.

While PlayNow.com was highlighted as the state’s only legitimate online gaming site, MBLL stressed that neither Club Regent Casino nor McPhilips Station Casino offer mobile apps or online gaming options and advised against participating in fake ads to protect privacy.
