Dedrick Lawson (26, 201 cm) led the way for DB with a big night from the inside.
Wonju DB won 107-103 against Suwon KT in the sixth round of the 2023-2024 Korean Basketball League at the Wonju General Gymnasium on Thursday.
Dedrick Lawson was the star of the game. Lawson poured in 47 points, his most in a single game this season, in the victory that clinched the regular season title.
DB only needed to win or lose by less than 19 points to celebrate, but the pressure of the championship was too much for them. DB struggled from the beginning of the game with poor shooting and were embarrassed by KT’s shots that came in showers.
DB, the strongest team this season, didn’t go down easily. They showed a strong determination to feast at home and started to pull away in the second half.
This was especially true for Lawson. Lawson had just eight points and a 27% field goal percentage at the end of the first half, but after halftime, he regained his form and blitzed KT.
The third quarter was the highlight.
Lawson single-handedly destroyed KT by utilizing every offensive option at his disposal, including fast break finishes, rim attacks, free throws, and three-pointers. From the beginning to the middle of the third quarter, Lawson scored 17 points in a row to keep his team in the game and eventually DB was able to turn the game into a seesaw.
Once he caught fire, Lawson was unstoppable. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and roared back-to-back three-pointers in overtime to seal the deal.
On the night, Lawson finished with 47 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals in 38 minutes and 14 seconds of action.
Lawson’s 47 points were not only a career-high, but also his most in a single game this season. The previous record was 46 points by SK’s Jamil Warney in the opener.
After the game, Lawson said, “I’m overwhelmed. We had a goal of making the playoffs, and I’m glad we won the regular season as well. Kang Sang-jae, Lee Sun Albano, and Kim 사설토토 Jong-kyu helped me become the best player I can be. I want to give credit to them,” he said after the win.
Lawson added, “47 points is the most I’ve ever scored in my basketball career. My teammates, including Kang Sang-jae and Park In-woong, set good screens for me. Paris Bass came to me and said, ‘I wish I could set screens like your team,'” he laughed.
Currently, Lee Sun Albano and Kang Sang-jae are the favorites for the domestic MVP. Lawson, who led DB to the regular season title, is one of the favorites for the foreign player MVP.
Finally, Lawson left a short and concise comment: “I want to win it too.”
