Former Major League Baseball (MLB) manager Jim Leland, 78, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next year. The Contemporary Committee (formerly known as the Veterans Committee), comprised of Hall of Fame inductees, former owners or general managers, and journalists, announced today that it has selected Leland for induction into the Hall of Fame next year. The Contemporary Committee is the organization that elects retired big leaguers, former managers and team administrators to the Hall of Fame who have made significant contributions to the game of baseball that are not eligible for the BBWAA ballot.Leland swept the ballot of the 16-member Hall of Fame Committee with 15 votes, narrowly missing the threshold for induction (12 votes – 75 percent of the vote). Lou Pinella received 11 votes, one short of being elected.
This marks the first time in 10 years that a former head coach has been voted into the Hall of Fame by the Hall of Fame Committee since 2013, when three living leends – former head coaches Bobby Cox, Tony La Russa and Joe Torre – were unanimously elected.Leland managed four franchises – the Pittsburgh Pirates, Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins), Colorado Rockies and Detroit Tigers – and won 1,769 career games, leading Florida to a World Series title in 1997.He also led Detroit to two American League championships. Most notably, Leland etched his name into big league history as one of only 10 managers in history to win both the American and National Leagues. In 2017, he served as manager of Team USA in the World Baseball Classic (WBC), giving his country its first-ever title.Leland will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next July in Cooperstown, 온라인카지노 New York, alongside inductees elected by BBWAA ballot in January 2024.
