New ice queen Kim Min-sun, 24, is slowly getting used to her new skating boots. The 24-year-old won bronze in the first race of the Women’s 500 meters Division A (1) at the 2023-2024 International Ice Skating Union (ISU) Speedskating World Cup on Sunday in Beijing, China, with a time of 38.00 seconds. It was her first medal of the season. She ran with Erin Jackson of the United States, the women’s 500-meter gold medalist at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, in a Group 9 outing The start was a little disappointing. Kim was ruled a false start for moving before the gun went off, and she was sent back to the starting line. Kim was a bit nervous and took off half a beat behind Jackson. Her first 100 meters were clocked at 10.62, good for eighth overall.
However, she quickly picked up the pace and ran away. Using her strong skating technique, she passed Jackson midway through the race .Kim was scary. She exited the final curve ahead of Jackson. However, she slowed down on the final straightaway, allowing Jackson to pull away .Jackson took first place with a time of 37.91, while the silver medal went to Kimi Goetz of the United States (37.92).Dutchwoman Utta Leirdam, who had a close rivalry with Kim last season, finished fourth in 38.01. The gap between Kim and Leirdam was 0.01 seconds, which is a satisfying result. Kim finished fifth in the women’s 500 meters in the first race of the World Cup in Obihiro, Japan, on Oct. 10 in 37.99 and seventh in the second race on Nov. 11 in 38.34.
It was a disappointing performance for Kim, who swept the women’s 500-meter gold medals at World Cups 1-5 last season .She switched skate boots in August in preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo. Usually, skaters need time to adjust to their new skates, which can lead to a drop in performance. Kim is currently focusing on adapting his skates and plans to complete the process by the end of the season.
There were also medals in the men’s 500 meters on the same day. Men’s sprinter Kim Jun-ho (Gangwon Provincial Office) crossed the line in 35.00 seconds to finish third behind Wataru Morishige (34.72) and Yuma Murakami (34.82-over Japan). He covered the first 100 meters in 9.67, the fourth-fastest time overall, and then kept up the pace to claim his first medal of the season. Cha Min-gyu (Dongducheon City Hall), who competed in the same event, finished last 토토 in the 20-man field with a time of 35.83.
